Isokinetic Conference in Athens: Returning to the Roots of Performance Medicine

Athens was not simply the host city of the 33rd Isokinetic International Conference. It represented a symbolic and cultural choice. Discussing rehabilitation, performance and sports medicine here means reconnecting innovation with its roots.

From 18 to 20 April, the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre welcomed more than 2,000 participants from over 80 countries, alongside 250 speakers and more than 600 scientific contributions. Led by Francesco Della Villa and Andrew Massey, the Isokinetic Conference transformed Athens into a global hub for sports medicine and performance science.

At the heart of the event was one key concept: Return to Performance.

Return to Performance: beyond returning to play

The theme of the Isokinetic Conference goes beyond physical recovery alone. Return to Performance represents a new vision of sports rehabilitation and athletic recovery.

For years, sports medicine defined success as simply returning to play. Today, that approach is no longer enough. Returning to performance means rebuilding confidence, restoring identity and reconnecting with the body.

Behind every clinical protocol there is always a person. That is why recovery must combine scientific expertise, individual care and the human dimension of rehabilitation.

The choice of Athens reinforces this message. It was here that Hippocrates developed one of the earliest scientific views of the human body, understood as a complex system built on constant balance.

According to Francesco Della Villa, the challenge facing modern sports medicine is finding the right balance between medicine and performance. Two worlds that are now more interconnected than ever.

The new paradigm of sports rehabilitation

Among the key topics discussed at the Isokinetic Athens Conference, anterior cruciate ligament injuries remain one of the greatest challenges in modern sports medicine.

The goal is no longer simply to repair a knee. The new frontier is injury prevention.

Athletic movement is shaped by the integration of perception, decision-making and movement control. For this reason, modern rehabilitation is moving beyond a purely structural approach.

From biomechanics to neurophysiology

Throughout the Congress, the importance of the connection between biomechanics and neurophysiology emerged as a central theme.

Rehabilitation is no longer seen solely as functional recovery. It is now understood as a process of neural reorganisation and whole-person adaptation.

Football remains at the centre of attention as the scientific and economic driving force of the sports industry. However, in Athens the discussion also expanded to the NBA and emerging international models of athletic performance.

An international community of sports medicine

The Isokinetic Conference in Athens brought together some of the most influential voices in international sports medicine.

Leading experts including Seth Sherman and Daniël Saris joined professionals from major clinical and sporting organisations around the world.

There was also a strong Greek presence at the Congress. Participants included the Director of Isokinetic Athens, Dr. Kyriakos Tsapralis, Medical Director Dr. Eleftherios Alexiou and the entire Athens-based team.

The scientific programme featured specialists from some of Greece’s leading football clubs, including:

  • – Nikos Tzouroudis (AEK Athens)
  • – Christos Theos (Olympiacos FC)
  • – Dionysios Chissas (Panathinaikos FC)
  • – Andreas Piskopakis (Iraklis FC)

Among the distinguished guests were Pantelis Nikolaou, orthopaedic surgeon Michael Hantes, Vice President of ESSKA, and Dr. Xenophon Roussis, supervisor of the Greek Super League.

Also in attendance were two iconic figures from Greek football: Vangelis Moras e Dimitrios Papadopoulos.

Innovation, young researchers and the future of performance

One of the most significant moments of the Isokinetic Conference in Athens was the “Next Gen Leader” awards, created to recognise and support young researchers in sports medicine and performance science.

The message is clear: sports medicine must anticipate change, not simply react to it.

Technology, data and artificial intelligence are reshaping clinical practice. In this evolving landscape, healthcare professionals become interpreters of complexity and guardians of a scientific yet deeply human approach.

For three days, in the shadow of the Acropolis, performance was explored through the rigour of science and the perspective of Mediterranean culture.

A continuous dialogue between innovation and tradition that the Isokinetic Conference in Athens successfully transformed into a concrete vision for the future of sports medicine and performance.
