Women’s football: why is the knee more at risk?

With Professor Fabrizio Tencone, Tuttosport’s “TS Medical” column analysed data, risk factors and strategies for preventing ligament injuries

SHARE

Knee injuries are one of the most widely discussed issues in women’s football. In particular, ligament injuries appear to affect female players more frequently than their male counterparts.

But what are the reasons for this difference?

In the latest episode of TS Medical, Tuttosport’s dedicated column, Professor Fabrizio Tencone, Director of the Isokinetic centre in Turin, analysed the phenomenon based on the available evidence.

Anatomical, hormonal and biomechanical factors may contribute to a greater risk of injury. These are compounded by training loads, athletic preparation and the specific characteristics of sporting movements.
However, not all of the most commonly cited explanations are equally supported by scientific evidence. It is therefore essential to distinguish genuine risk factors from the misconceptions surrounding the issue.

During the interview, particular attention is given to prevention and to strategies that can help reduce the incidence of injuries. The aim is to protect the athletes’ health and minimise time away from the game, which can have significant consequences for their careers.
