Khephren Thuram will have to undergo knee surgery after conservative treatment failed. The Juventus midfielder is suffering from patellofemoral syndrome, an issue that first emerged towards the end of last season. During the summer, the Frenchman followed a specific treatment programme, missing all of Juventus’ pre-season friendlies.

The improvement in his condition had nevertheless allowed him to be included in the squad for the opening league match against Frosinone. In recent days, however, another setback has dashed hopes of resolving the problem once and for all without surgery.

Juventus and the player have therefore decided to opt for surgery. The procedure, scheduled to take place in Lyon, is intended to address a problem related to wear and tear of the knee cartilage.

According to Professor Fabrizio Tencone, Director of Isokinetic Turin, who was interviewed by Tuttosport, cartilage plays a crucial role in protecting and cushioning the joint. Cartilage damage can be chronic and degenerative in nature or result from sudden trauma and an unnatural twisting movement.
In less severe cases, treatment may involve injections and specific exercises aimed at reducing the load on the joint. However, cartilage is unable to regenerate on its own, and in some cases surgery becomes unavoidable. Surgical techniques may involve stimulating the bone or using cells harvested from the player’s own cartilage.

After the operation, a lengthy rehabilitation process will be required, during which the knee will initially need to remain immobilised. The estimated recovery time is at least three to four months.
It is a significant absence for Juventus, with the Frenchman potentially expected to return in the first few weeks of 2027.
