Shoulder pain is a very common problem that can have different causes and may require specific treatment approaches. Understanding the cause of shoulder pain, knowing what treatment options are available today, and having the time to discuss them with your doctor are all important aspects of making informed decisions about how to address the problem.
On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, the Green Room at Isokinetic Turin hosted an evening dedicated to shoulder pain, led by Dr Marco Gastaldo, a specialist in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. The audience included patients, former patients and their companions who were interested in learning more about the topic.
Here are some key moments from the evening.
Dr Gastaldo explained the crucial importance of a specialist assessment for persistent shoulder pain. Ultrasound complements the clinical examination, allowing tendons and other structures of the joint to be assessed even while the shoulder is moving. MRI is only needed when its findings can genuinely influence the clinical decision.
Dr Gastaldo highlighted that scientific research is very clear when it comes to treatment: rehabilitation based on therapeutic exercise is the most powerful treatment available for many shoulder conditions. It needs to be guided and requires time—on average, around twelve weeks of work are needed to understand whether a rehabilitation programme is working. Tendons respond to gradually increasing loads, adapting over time and regaining function.
Surgery is a treatment option that should be considered carefully. In some cases, it may be necessary as a first-line treatment or after a trial of conservative treatment, while in others it can be avoided altogether.
The evening came to a pleasant close with an aperitif.
